It’s Never Too Late: Serving Re-Entry Students From Foster Care

When serving former foster youth, program resources are limited and programs must make hard choices about who to serve and who to exclude and one common practice is to set an age cap for participants. Some programs, however have chosen to provide program access to older students who are re-entering higher education after several years away from an educational setting. This webinar featured foster youth campus program representatives from UC Davis and Los Angeles Trade Tech College who shared information about why they have chosen to include older students as part of their target population as well as information about the unique needs and challenges that these former foster care students bring. Specific strategies for addressing these needs were shared and a re-entry student shared about her direct experience returning to college and how she was assisted by the campuses foster youth support program.
