Last year, just 6% of foster youth in LA County received the Foster Youth Tax Credit, which provides $1,117 to current and former foster youth who file their state taxes. The eligibility for this new tax credit is identical to the eligibility for NextUp.

Please join John Burton Advocates for Youth (JBAY) and the Economic Security Project on Friday, March 22nd from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. to learn what your NextUp program can do to make sure every eligible student on your campus gets this valuable tax credit.

At the training, attendees will learn about the Claim Your Cash Call Center Hotline (888-844-3276) established by LA County. This hotline provides free tax preparation and referrals to people who can provide high-quality tax filing assistance. Use of the hotline has previously been limited to county departments but is now being made available to NextUp campuses in LA County.

Please join John Burton Advocates for Youth (JBAY) for a State Capitol reception honoring California State Senator John L. Burton (Ret.) and celebrating the 20th anniversary of John Burton Advocates for Youth.

The event will be held at the California Museum at 1020 “O” Street in Sacramento, CA . A full reception from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Turning Dreams into Degrees is a two-part training that equips caregivers, including STRTP staff and resource families, to prepare youth in their care for postsecondary education success. This 1-hour training will provide an overview of updates made to the curricula since December 2022. These updates will include information on the new FAFSA and changes to campus support programs as well as general updates made to the presentation materials. This training is intended for facilitators who are already familiar with the full-length training.

2024 Blueprint For Success Conference 

The 2024 Blueprint for Success Conference will be a dynamic two-day event combining meaningful networking opportunities with in-depth workshops presented by professionals with a passion and aptitude for supporting foster youth to graduate college ready to thrive in the 21st century workplace.  

This year’s event will be held on October 28/29, 2024, in Los Angeles at the LAX Westin. The conference will feature breakout sessions, plenary sessions with keynote speakers, and networking opportunities, including a reception on the evening of October 28. 

In addition, eighty foster youth scholars will be selected to receive subsidized conference registration along with fully paid travel costs to attend the event. Scholars selected to attend will also receive training on networking, strategic sharing, foster care issues and education opportunities prior to the event.
