Important Deadlines

Planning for college cannot begin too early. There are many important deadlines to be aware of and plan for well ahead of the actual application process. Don’t wait until the last semester of a student’s senior year to start planning as you will have already missed important deadlines. The deadlines below are based on a fall term start.

California State Universities (CSU) and University of California (UC)

  • SAT test
    • Take test: no later than early December (for attending the following fall) (exact dates vary by year – test registration is generally required at least one month in advance of the test date).
    • Signup: www.collegeboard.org
  • ACT test:
    • Take test: no later than early December (for attending the following fall) (exact dates vary by year – test registration is generally required at least one month in advance of the test date).
    • Signup: www.actstudent.org
  • CSU enrollment application period: October 1 – November 30 (for attending the following fall)
  • UC enrollment application period: November 1 – 30 (for attending the following fall)
  • Foster Youth Campus Support Programs and EOP application deadlines: check with your school counselor.
  • Once accepted into a university, there are important deadlines related to the admissions and registration process, including deadlines for paying fees, submitting applications for campus housing and registering for courses. Students should check with individual campuses to determine these deadlines.

Community College

  • There is no specific deadline for applying to community college, however it is strongly encouraged that students apply by January for the following fall in order to complete matriculation requirements in time to access April priority registration.

  • Once a student identifies which college they plan to attend, there are important deadlines related to the registration process, including deadlines for paying fees, taking assessment tests and registering for courses. Students should check with individual campuses to determine these deadlines.

Financial Aid (all students)

Students who miss the March 2 deadline should still apply, but early application is strongly encouraged. For more information about Financial Aid, visit “Financial Aid.”

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): March 2 for maximum financial aid. Applications may still be submitted after this date.
  • CalGrant: January 1 – March 2 (for maximum financial aid – community college students can apply through September 2, but funding is limited for those who miss the March 2 deadline)
  • Chafee Grant: Apply by March 2 for maximum aid – those who miss this deadline should still apply
